Producing liquid iron sustainably
With a new process for producing steel, the traditional chain can be replaced. This makes it possible to produce pig iron anywhere in the world with 20% lower CO2 emissions.
If combined with carbon storage, this could result in 80% lower CO2 emissions.
The new technology for producing liquid iron using iron ore and coal as raw materials shortens the production chain for making steel. Current production involves three steps to produce pig iron: a sinter plant, a coke oven and a blast furnace. The same result can now be achieved in a single step, leading to significant energy savings and reduced CO2 emissions. This production method allows the use of more recycled scrap steel.
